The Secret of Play
How to Raise Smart, Healthy,
Caring Kids from Birth to Age 12


Play is what kids do best—and how they learn best, too. And toy giant FAO Schwarz is pretty much the authority on play. So when we sat down with executives at FAO Schwarz and Good Morning America’s parenting expert Ann Pleshette Murphy to discuss a parenting book concept, The Secret of Play emerged quite naturally. In addition to working with the author and design team to shape the book, we produced the photography for this gorgeous celebration of the fun part of parenting.

The Snack Factor Diet

We worked closely with mediagenic nutritionist Keri Glassman to translate her "un-diet" philosophy (that snacking well anchors your health) into a book.

USA Today Picture Puzzles Across America
Downtown Bookworks resident puzzlemakers teamed up with the nations No. 1 newspaper to make brain-bending, eye-straining, mind-challenging puzzles featuring people, places, and things from all over the country. From Vegas Elvis-impersonators to Miami muscle cars, and from San Francisco fireworks to the boats of Boston harbor, the 100 spot-the-difference puzzles in this book were handpicked to take the reader from sea to shining sea. And we created this book in three fast-paced months.

 

Books for KIDS

The Around the World Cookbook

This colorful and easy-to-use cookbook shows budding chefs that it really is a small (and tasty!) world after all. Part cookbook, part travel book, Around the World Cookbook contains more than 50 kid-pleasing recipes and is chock full of fun food factoids and interesting historical and cultural information. Downtown Bookworks partnered with James Beard and IACP award nominee Abigail Johnson Dodge to create the recipes and text.


Artful Accessories

Artful Accessories features 12 projects inspired by works of art by painters including Raphael, Sargent, Manet, and Seurat. We worked closely with the publisher to develop accessory projects that were inspired by pieces of well-known fine art and could be created with materials that could be sourced and included in the kit. We also worked closely with an illustrator and a photographer to create step-by-step illustrated instructions and beautiful finish photos. Accompanying each project is information about the artist and the artwork featured. All of the materials needed to complete six of the projects are included in the kit.


Artful Jewelry Kit

Art meets crafts! This unique kit features step-by-step instructions for jewelry projects inspired by famous works of art, such as earrings that capture the soft spring colors of Botticelli’s La Primavera, a necklace celebrating the swirly sky of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and teardrop pearl earrings straight out of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. All the materials needed to complete
six of the 12 projects are included so young crafters can get started right away. The book also provides information on each artist’s life and work, offering lessons in art history to complement the crafting.

Adapted from Charles Mann’s groundbreaking bestseller 1491, this fascinating, fully illustrated history is designed for kids eight and up. Just as 1491 shattered myths and misconceptions about Native Americans in the New World, Before Columbus sheds new light for students learning about this era of history. We worked closely with the author to ensure that his extensive research and revelations would resonate with middle
-grade readers.

Can I Push the Button?

If you’ve ever been in an elevator with a little kid, you know that they want nothing more than to push those buttons. With that in mind, we wrote the text for this charming story, commissioned the illustrations and book design, and partnered with Piggy Toes Press on this interactive board book for toddlers. Kids will love pushing real buttons (with sound!) all around town as they learn to count backwards from six to one with a disappearing die-cut format.

Celebrity "Mini" Series

O
ne Direction, the Jonas Brothers, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Taylor Lautner, and Justin Bieber all have something in common—devoted fans around the world who make them the perfect subjects for mini-biographies filled with anecdotes, quotes, and tons of fantastic photos.


Clifford's Big Dictionary
Downtown Bookworks poured through an enormous (and heartwarming) archive of Clifford artwork to select the clearest images to depict everything from acorn and alien to zigzag and zoom. In addition to providing an illustration and sample sentence for more than 400 words, this whimsical, illustrated dictionary also features colors, numbers, seasons, opposites, and more.


Corbin Bleu Up Close
Written, designed, and printed in less than three months, Up Close is the only authorized biography of rising star Corbin Bleu. Filled with never-before-seen photos and personal stories from Corbin, this is the perfect book for any Corbin Bleu fan!

Disney Poster-A-Page books
This series highlights some of Disneys most-cherished characters. Downtown Bookworks coined the series name and used beloved Disney artwork to create the look for the series. In each of the books, every page is a poster. In addition, every book comes with

Quizzes on all things important to tweens, fabulous illustrations, and a super-charged design by the incomparable Georgia Rucker make these eye-catching books compulsive fun. Book 1 hit the shelves in November 2006;

Harry Potter Poster Book
Downtown Bookworks worked with an incredibly talented designer to seamlessly weave together still photography and design elements from all eight Harry Potter films to create two editions of this book. Both editions feature 15 x 20-inch foldout posters—including one that spotlights more than 100 characters. (Can you name them all?)

Lucasfilms Poster-A-Page books
Combing through the artwork from six seminal movies was a tall task (and a fun one)! But we did it, adding The Skywalker Saga to Time Home Entertainments growing list of Poster-A-Page books. We also added the newest Star Wars property to the mix with Star Wars Rebels: Rogue Heroes. Stay tuned for more Poster-A-Page books featuring Star Wars characters.


The Marshmallow Incident

From the team behind the mega-best-selling Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, this treat of a tale about Left and Right, and Right and Wrong will leave readers laughing out loud and begging for s’more!


Marvel Poster-A-Page Books
Downtown Bookworks packaged an Avengers Assemble and a Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. poster-a-page book. Every one of the 128 pages in each book is a poster, and each book comes with nine supersize posters. We coined the series name, developed the look, combed through lots of artwork, and worked with Marvel art to create compelling, action-packed posters.


Nickelodeon activity books
Time Home Entertainment Inc. called on Downtown Bookworks to select, repackage, resize, and Americanize some existing puzzles and games for new, lively activity books: The Annual Big Book of SpongeBob SquarePants and The Annual Big Book of Dora the Explorer.


Painting with Picasso, Quiet Time with Cassat, Dreaming with Rousseau, & On an Island with Gauguin

Chronicle
s hugely successful Minimasters series features fine art paired with lyrical text in charming board books for the youngest art lovers. Co-authored by Downtown Bookworks' Julie Merberg, these parents (and grandparents) favorites have been featured in places from the Metropolitan Museum catalog to People magazine.

Recyclo-Gami

Amazing crafter and former editor at Child magazine, Laurie Goldrich Wolf created more than 40 crafts for this eco-conscious how-to book. For every one of the recycled craft projects, the design features several interim step photos, along with concise instructions. Crafts include repurposed crayons, bowls made from discarded DVDs, wind chimes created from plastic ice cream shop spoons and bowls, decorative coasters culled from old T-shirts, and stylish paper necklaces formed from old magazines and junk mail.

Superstars!
Time Inc. chose Downtown Bookworks to launch its SUPERSTARS brand for our expertise in the ever-changing tween market, as well as for our ability to produce titles with great style and speed. Packed with glossy photographs and filled with information about teen celebrities and the lives they lead, we created both newsstand and trade editions for each title under extremely tight deadlines.

This star-studded follow-up to Teen People Celebrity Beauty Guide shows girls how to have big screen style every day.

TIME For Kids Almanac
Downtown Bookworks produced the for
eight years. The ultimate in edutainment, this lavishly illustrated reference offers an overview on everything from sports and states to pop culture and cultures around the world. Thousands of stats, fun facts, and kid-centric current events make it a must-have for tweens. For the 2015 Almanac, we overhauled the books design, adding more infographics and large, dynamic photos. The new-and-improved Almanac is longer and even more packed with information than the previous editions. It features extended sections on science, sports, animals, the environment, and more!


TFK-science TIME For Kids: Big Book of Science Experiments
Award-winning science-enrichment organization Mad Science supplied us with fun, informative, hands-on science experiments ranging in skill level from simple to complex for ages 8 to 13. Downtown Bookworks worked with an artist to create simple, clear, step-by-step illustrations (that's more than 250 illustrations!). With a team of five experienced science writers, we created two pages of science information to contextualize each experiment. Downtown Bookworks produced this colorful, fact-filled, heavily illustrated book on an accelerated schedule.

TIME For Kids: Grammar Rules!
This handy grammar guide and workbook is filled with simple, sensible text explaining the rules of grammar for kids in grades 4 to 6. Its also packed with activities, exercises, and games. Unlike many grammar guides, this book is lush and colorful, illustrated with both photos and targeted original illustrations.

TIME For Kids: President Obama:
A Day in the Life of America’s Leader

Downtown Bookworks created this 128-page, picture-packed, thoroughly informative book about President Obama in two months. Covering everything from the Commander in Chief’s morning routine to his travels around the country and around the world, President Obama gives young readers an inside look at the presidency and the White House.

TIME For Kids Science Almanac
Downtown Bookworks tapped a team of top-notch science writers to come up with a table of contents covering a wide range of topics, from the scientific method, mass, and the muscular system to the Venus, volcanoes, and venomous animals. We consulted the editors at during the editorial and photo-selection processes to make sure the concepts would be clear and understandable to kids and the design would be lively and engaging.

We produced this lively custom magazine in collaboration with Time for Kids for distribution to Girl Scouts of America. This heavily illustrated custom publication features different sections for each Girl Scout level, from age 5 to 17.


TIME For Kids: Top 5 of Everything
Fun, informative top 5 lists (highest mountains, fastest roller coasters, most-wanted tech items, biggest spiders, favorite pies) are a beloved feature of magazine. To compile this quirky little book, we picked the best of the top 5 lists from the magazine and updated the facts. Then we researched and compiled some additional high-interest, up-to-date top 5 lists. To these lists, we added fun facts, and created an inviting design, perfect for curious readers of all ages.

TIME For Kids: World Atlas
Revised and updated, this Atlas takes children on a voyage around the world in 144 exciting full-color pages with more than 250 photos and 50 great-looking topographic and political maps.

Warner Bros. Activity Books
The editors of Downtown Bookworks read through previously published booklets and culled material for two 160-page activity books for the trade: The Officially Awesome Scooby-Doo Activity Book and The Officially Awesome Looney Tunes Activity Book. Each book is filled with exciting, varied puzzles, games, brainteasers, doodle prompts, and more. We resized the art, Americanized the text, and created clear, new answer keys. Then we cut down and repaginated the books to create 96-page bookazines for the newsstand market.
